In 2026, the 63rd International Scientific and Practical Conference “KSMA Science Days – 2026” is dedicated to the 115th anniversary of Fatima Nurgazievna Nurgazieva (1911–1995) — an outstanding stateswoman and public figure, one of the prominent representatives of Kyrgyzstan’s medical elite of the 20th century, and the first Kyrgyz woman to serve as Minister of Health of the Republic and Rector of the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute.

Fatima Nurgazievna was born in 1911 in the Issyk-Kul region into a shepherd’s family. Her childhood and youth coincided with a difficult historical period: during the events of Urkun (1916), her family was forced to flee to China and returned to their homeland several years later. Despite severe life challenges, she became actively involved in public activities at an early age, received her education in Frunze and Tashkent, and began her professional career in 1929 as a teacher and women’s organizer.

From 1938 onward, her professional life was closely associated with the healthcare system. In 1940, she completed courses for healthcare administrators in Moscow, and during the Great Patriotic War served as First Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic, playing a key role in organizing medical care in the rear. In 1947, she graduated from the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute and obtained a medical degree.

In 1949, Fatima Nurgazievna was appointed Minister of Social Welfare, and from 1950 she served as Minister of Health of the Kyrgyz SSR. From 1955 to 1963, she held the position of Rector of the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute. During this period, new faculties were established, the material and technical infrastructure of the university was significantly strengthened, and student enrollment was expanded, including a substantial increase in the number of students from the Kyrgyz population, which played an important role in the development of national medical education.

Fatima Nurgazieva was the author of eight scientific publications devoted to the study of the therapeutic properties of mineral waters from the Ak-Suu, Issyk-Ata, and Jalal-Abad resorts, as well as to the development of spa and resort medicine in Kyrgyzstan. From 1962 onward, she continued her medical practice, working in the maternal and child health system and later serving as Chief Physician of a pediatric tuberculosis sanatorium.

For her outstanding contributions to the state and to public health, Fatima Nurgazievna was awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Badge of Honor, and several medals, and was granted the honorary title of Honored Doctor of the Kyrgyz SSR. She was elected as a Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and of the Kyrgyz SSR.

Dedicating the conference to the memory of Fatima Nurgazievna Nurgazieva emphasizes the continuity of scientific and educational traditions of KSMA and reflects deep respect for her contribution to the development of medical science, healthcare, and the training of medical professionals in Kyrgyzstan.
